The Egoic Pursuit of Enlightenment

When you think about the spiritual path and enlightenment, there comes a point where you stumble upon a truly difficult to swallow paradox.

On the one hand, enlightenment is about the dissolution of the ego and the realisation of total unity with everything in existence. On the other hand, chasing that as a goal, desiring to be enlightened can also be seen as an arrogant and delusional aspiration.

What makes you so special? There's eight billion of us and you think you're the one that'll be chosen, you're the one who will be graced with the divine lightning strike, beyond which you'll see through it all?

You're chosen and worthy? What makes you think that? What makes you think that you'll be able to become a master at the pinnacle of consciousness? And doesn't wanting all of this sound incredibly egotistical? Aren't you being ungrateful? Isn't existence enough for you?

Perhaps the truly egoless and wise thing to do is to let go of the pursuit alltogether. Live. Don't meditate your life away trying to achieve something which might not even exist, certainly not in the conception you have of it.

There is nothing to achieve. There is nowhere to go. So go to the now-here and enjoy it, for real meditation is fun and doesn't aim at something beyond itself.
